What is the degree program about?
How do navigation devices always find the shortest route? How do you read a balance sheet? How does demographic change affect the risk management of banks and insurance companies? Business mathematics is a strongly application-oriented mathematics program in which students learn structures and techniques that enable them to analyze and solve mathematical problems, such as those encountered by banks and insurance companies, or that are used to optimize utility networks (energy, water, logistics).
The combination of the three subject areas of mathematics, economics and computer science ensures optimal preparation for professional life. In addition to basic courses in the three disciplines (e.g. analysis, economics, programming), the program also includes several courses that are structured in such a way that all three disciplines are taken into account simultaneously (e.g. Introduction to Statistics and Statistical Programming, Linear and Combinatorial Optimization, Optimization Project Seminar). In addition, the Bachelor of Business Mathematics program is characterized by a large proportion of free elective modules, which account for 20% of the entire program.
After graduation, you will be able to analyze and optimize economic problems using mathematical methods, predict processes and offer solutions to companies.

The study of business mathematics leading to a bachelor’s degree comprises a foundation and orientation phase of two semesters and a bachelor’s phase of four semesters. A total of 180 ECTS credits are required for successful completion of the program. The program is divided into the blocks „Basic Modules in Mathematics“ (50 ECTS), „Advanced Modules in Stochastics and Optimization“ (20-30 ECTS), „Mathematical Elective Modules“ (15-25 ECTS), „Minor in Economics“ (30 ECTS), „Minor in Computer Science“ (15 ECTS), „Cross-Sectional Module and Seminar“ (15 ECTS), „Key Qualifications“ (10 ECTS) and „Bachelor Seminar and Bachelor Thesis“ (15 ECTS). Further details about the degree program can be found in the corresponding examination regulations.

Professional internship
In the Bachelor’s program in Business Mathematics, a minimum four-week work placement (5 ECTS) or a minimum eight-week work placement (10 ECTS) can be included as a key qualification. Prerequisites for this are:
- The internship must be registered with the examination office at least two weeks before the start of the internship (form). The letter of acceptance from the internship site must be attached to the registration. The letter of acceptance must state the nature of the internship activity.
- A report on the internship must be written (guidelines), which must be submitted to the examination office at the latest four weeks after the end of the internship together with an internship certificate from the employer. (If required, a pre-printed form (doc, pdf) can be used for the internship certificate).
Orientation Week
From October 7th to 11th 2024, the teaching unit of the Departments of Mathematics and Data Science is offering an orientation week aimed at all first-year students of the following degree programs:
