The Faculty of Sciences at FAU
The Faculty of Sciences at FAU is one of the strongest research faculties in Germany. Its Departments regularly occupy leading positions in a wide variety of rankings. Scientists at the Faculty have won numerous highly endowed prizes and awards.
The research spectrum of the Faculty of Sciences covers both basic and applied research. Interdisciplinarity plays a major role: the Departments are not only networked with each other, they also conduct joint research with the four other Faculties as well as with national and international institutions. The Faculty is involved in seven of FAU‘s eight scientific foci and has also established its own research foci, ranging from communication and signal conduction, molecular materials and geodynamics, geomaterials and georesources, to representation theory, astroparticle physics or optics. Interdisciplinary centers and the participation in the Cluster of Excellence “Engineering of Advanced Materials“ illustrate the focus of the research–strong Faculty.
With its range of courses, the Faculty covers all areas of the natural sciences: Students receive a high–quality education in twelve bachelor‘s and 14 master‘s degree programs, two state examination programs, and teacher training programs in biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics, and physics. Since the Faculty closely integrates research and teaching, new research results can be directly incorporated into teaching. Conversely, research–related, intensively supervised theses contribute directly to the further development of research. With Physics Advanced and Integrated Immunology, the Faculty of Sciences also offers two elite degree programs from the Elite Network Bavaria.
